The average cost of owning a dog in the UK and EU is between £ 950 and £ 2,850 per year. That is not a small amount of money and prices are rising all the time.

All FFH adopted dogs must be insured, this will cost you between £ 15 to £ 40 per month. The cheapest insurance is not always the best. Potential adopters will need to research and find the most appropriate option considering what is covered within the plan and the level of excess fees they can afford.

It is also vital that you treat your dog regularly with parasite medication including wormer, tick and flea treatment. This can cost between £ 10 to £ 40 per month.

The average food costs for one dog can range from £ 50 to £ 145 per month depending on their individual dietary requirements. There are many low cost brands available that are very good quality and provide everything your dog needs, but it will take time to find the right food for your dog.

Annual vaccinations and boosters cost £ 50 to £ 150 per year depending on the vet that you choose to use. Many vets in the UK offer 'Pet Plan' arrangements where the cost can be spread over a year through monthly payments.

What is in the Adoption Contract?

The adoption contract includes some clauses you should be aware of before proceeding:

“Should the Adopter  be unable or unwilling to keep the dog, the Adopter  will  contact Finding Forever Homes at their earliest opportunity and will cooperate fully to return the dog into the care of Finding Forever Homes.”

“The Adopter will not sell, give away or otherwise dispose of the dog to any person(s), dealer, retailer, auction, institute or any other entity for any reason without prior written authorisation of CJW on behalf of Finding Forever Homes.”

It is your responsibility to read the contract fully before signing. It is essential that you understand the legal obligations to which you have agreed before proceeding with any adoption

12 things to consider before adopting a dog

Adopting a dog is a wonderful experience and something the whole family can enjoy. According to RestedPaws, over 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized a year in the US with the large majority of these being dogs and there are over 100k dogs in the UK that are homeless at any given time.

But adopting a dog is also a big decision to make, and one that should not be taken lightly. So before welcoming any new pet into your home it’s important to be aware of some of the responsibilities that come with owning it.
